Announcing Our Investment in ModernLoop

Hiring is the most important thing a company does. It's also one of the most operationally painful.

Anyone who has scaled a team knows the feeling. The candidate is great, the hiring manager is excited, and then the whole thing stalls for a week because five interviewers can't find a shared hour on the calendar. Recruiting coordinators spend their days playing calendar Tetris instead of building relationships with candidates.

ModernLoop set out to fix that. Today, I'm thrilled to share that Curious has invested in ModernLoop, a company backed by Accel and Y Combinator with customers like Anthropic, Instacart, Brex, and many more leading technology companies. We're joining them in that mission.

About ModernLoop

ModernLoop was founded in 2020 by Lydia Han and Christopher Triolo. Lydia came from Salesforce, Meta, and Slack, where she built Slack's Zoom and Google Calendar integrations, and Christopher had led Facebook's charitable donations product at Meta. They went through Y Combinator's Winter 2021 batch with a simple observation: recruiters were spending most of their day on manual, repetitive tasks.

What they built is a recruiting operations platform that takes that work off the table. The hard part isn't finding a free hour, it's knowing which of the meetings already on the calendar can move and which can't. ModernLoop reads every interviewer's calendar, works that out, and builds the loop around it.

That matters most for companies hiring at volume. Scheduling pain doesn't grow in a straight line with headcount, it compounds, because every open role competes with every other open role for the same handful of interviewer calendars. Past a certain point, coordination stops being an annoyance and starts being the thing capping how fast you can hire. ModernLoop balances interviewer load so the same four people don't carry every panel, and it runs shadowing and reverse shadowing programs so a company can grow its interviewer bench as fast as it grows headcount. It also connects to every major applicant tracking system, so it keeps working when a company switches systems.

Today it schedules more than 160,000 interviews a month. Ramp, Descript, Anthropic, Instacart, and hundreds more all run their hiring on ModernLoop. The results speak for themselves. Instacart tripled its interview volume without adding coordinators. Brex doubled its recruiter-to-coordinator ratio.

Along the way, ModernLoop raised roughly $12 million, including a $9 million Series A led by Accel, with participation from Quiet Capital, Webb Investment Network, and Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield. That's a remarkable group, and a testament to what Lydia, Christopher, and the team built.

Why ModernLoop, and why Curious

At Curious, we look for great software businesses that solve painful, durable problems for customers who love them. ModernLoop checks every box.

Scheduling interviews isn't going away. If anything, it's getting harder. Teams are more distributed, interview loops are more complex, and recruiting teams are being asked to do more with fewer people. ModernLoop sits right at the center of that tension, and its customers are some of the most demanding, fastest-growing companies in tech.

ModernLoop is also a familiar story for us. It's a great product that raised venture capital on a model that demands hypergrowth at all costs. When the hiring market cooled, that model stopped fitting the business, not because the product stopped working, but because the expectations around it changed. That's exactly the kind of company Curious exists for. Our philosophy is continuation and acceleration: keep what makes the product great, and give it a long-term home where it can keep growing.

What's next

For ModernLoop customers, the most important thing to know is this: the commitment to the product and platform grows from here. Your scheduling, your integrations, and your support stay exactly where they are.

Looking ahead, we're focused on three things:

1. Doubling down on the core. Interview scheduling is what ModernLoop does best, and we're committed to making it the best scheduling product in recruiting, full stop.

2. Leaning into AI. Taylor AI is just the beginning. We see a future where the coordination work of recruiting, from scheduling to rescheduling to candidate follow-ups, is handled by agents, and recruiters get their time back for the human parts of the job.

3. Bringing ModernLoop to more teams. Great recruiting operations shouldn't be reserved for companies with large coordinator teams. We want to make ModernLoop easier to adopt for growing companies of every size.

To Lydia, Christopher, and the entire ModernLoop team: thank you for building something customers truly rely on, and thank you for your trust. We're honored to carry it forward and welcome Dave Aidekman to lead that mission as CEO.

This is day one of the next chapter for ModernLoop, and we couldn't be more excited about what's ahead.
